Victor Wembanyama’s 3-0 Week: 108 Points, 13 Blocks, 9 Dunks
Three games, three wins and a stat line that reads like a wrestling promo. So we wrote it as one.
Ladies and gentlemen, the second week of the NBA season belonged to one very tall man. Victor Wembanyama opened the season 1 for 13 from the field and
ended his first week on the wrong end of a highlight block. Seven days later he had 108 points in three games, 13 blocks, a nine-dunk night and a 43-point Saturday, and the
Spurs had won four in a row. Every great wrestler needs a comeback story. Here is his, told the only way it deserves.
The Signature Moves
Five moves from Week 2, rated by crowd pop. Open each card’s box to see whether it really happened. (It did. All of it.)
Every great comeback needs a bad first act. Wemby opened the season against Oklahoma City with 12 points on 1-for-13 shooting, along with 13 rebounds and 6 blocks, and the Spurs lost.
Three nights later Houston’s Amen Thompson blocked him at the rim in the final seconds to save a 114-110 Rockets win. Kevin Durant called it a “game-saving block” and marveled that a 6-foot-7 player got up to block a 7-foot-5 one, per NBA.com. San Antonio was 0-2. The crowd was quiet. Every wrestling fan knows what happens next.

Against Sacramento, Wembanyama made 14 of 21 shots, and nine of them were dunks, matching his career high. Fifteen of his 29 points came in the first quarter, four dunks included. He added 10 rebounds and 5 blocks in 26 minutes, and teammate Julian Champagnie made 8 threes for good measure.
Afterward Wemby explained the lob strategy like a man describing a tax loophole: “We always try to do it because it’s the most efficient shot in the game,” he told reporters. The Kings fell to 0-4. Nobody in Sacramento disputed the math.

The next night in Salt Lake City, Utah led by as many as 11 and was up 55-51 at halftime. Wembanyama had 21 of his 36 points by the break and finished with 14 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Keyonte George scored a season-high 31 for the Jazz and dragged them into overtime.
Then the Spurs closed the door. After Utah opened overtime with a three, San Antonio ran off 12 straight points, forced four turnovers and held the Jazz to 2 of 7 shooting in the extra period. De’Aaron Fox finished it with a dunk. That is a tag-team finish.

Most players need a teammate to throw them an alley-oop. Against Minnesota, Wemby threw the ball off the backboard and went and got it himself for a layup that put San Antonio up 43-33, per the AP recap. It is a move usually reserved for dunk contests and driveways. He did it in a real game.
The Timberwolves were short-handed. Anthony Edwards was out after knee surgery and Rudy Gobert sat with back spasms. Minnesota still made a 16-0 run in the second quarter to take the lead. It did not last.
Real or kayfabe?
Late in the same game Wembanyama blocked a Jonathan Kuminga three, sprinted the length of the floor and finished with a two-handed dunk. That bucket was his 40th point. He ended with 43 on 17 of 34 shooting, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 blocks.
It was the 11th 40-point game of his career and the Spurs’ fourth straight win. Ring the bell.
