Vegeta’s 9 Most Vegeta Moments, Ranked (Over 9000 to Bingo)

Vegeta has spent 37 years being the proudest man in anime. We ranked the nine moments that define him and pointed a scouter at his pride in each one.

It is a good month to be Vegeta. Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, an enhanced re-edit with new cuts, re-rendered footage and newly recorded dubbing, premiered October 11 on Fuji TV and on Crunchyroll the same day. It is also on Hulu, and it reached Netflix on October 17. Its first arc is the one where a god of destruction crashes Bulma’s birthday party, which means Vegeta’s most humbling night is streaming again for a new audience. Also on October 17, the clip that turned “It’s over 9000!” into a meme turned 20.

So here is the ranking. Nine moments, from the merely very Vegeta to the most Vegeta thing he ever did. Every event, episode and date below is real and sourced. The pride readings are our scouter’s, and our scouter has opinions.

The Ranking

He made takoyaki for the God of Destruction
Dragon Ball Super, episode 6 · Aug 16, 2015

Beerus, a god whose job is destroying planets, shows up at Bulma’s birthday party. In the Dragon Ball Super TV version, Vegeta tries to keep him from wrecking Earth by making him takoyaki. It works, for a while.

This is a man who once called himself the Prince of all Saiyans standing over a griddle, flipping octopus balls for a cat.

Pride

Did his pride survive?
Barely. But Earth did, so he will tell you it was strategy.
8
He conquered a planet on his lunch break
Dragon Ball Z, original episodes 11 to 14 · anime only

On the way to Earth, Vegeta set his pod’s wake-up timer early so he could take over Planet Arlia and sell it. He fought King Moai and his guards, looked around, decided the place was too run-down to bring a good price, and blew up the whole planet with a Galick Beam.

The detour only exists in the anime. The edited English release squeezed four original episodes into one called “Trouble on Arlia.” He conquered a planet, judged it, and deleted it, all before reaching the place he was actually going.

Pride

Did his pride survive?
Fully intact. Arlia did not.
7
He let Cell become perfect, on purpose
Dragon Ball Z, episode 159 · Sep 30, 1992

Vegeta had just gotten stronger and wanted a real fight. Cell needed to absorb Android 18 to reach his perfect form. Future Trunks, his own son, tried to stop it, and Vegeta got in his way so Cell could finish.

Put plainly, his overconfidence let Cell absorb 18. Perfect Cell then beat him. Vegeta later helped Gohan finish the job, which is the closest he will get to admitting he was wrong.

Pride

Did his pride survive?
It survived. The rest of the planet nearly did not.
6
He let a wizard into his head for a rematch
Dragon Ball Z, Babidi Saga · 1994

Vegeta entered the World Martial Arts Tournament with one goal, and it was beating Goku, not making nice family memories. Babidi’s servant Dabura noticed how much darkness Vegeta was carrying and decided he could be turned.

Vegeta let Babidi’s power take hold of him and became Majin Vegeta, rematch finally booked. He knew exactly what he was signing up for and signed anyway.

Pride

Did his pride survive?
Pride was the whole reason he did it.
5
The bingo dance
Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods · March 30, 2013

Battle of Gods was the first animated Dragon Ball movie in theaters in 17 years, and the first one Akira Toriyama supervised personally. It made around $50.4 million. It also contains the scene of Vegeta at Bulma’s party, trying to keep Beerus calm by desperately performing a song and dance about bingo.

Let that sit. The proudest man in anime, in front of his wife, his son and Goku’s entire friend group, singing about bingo.

Pride
3
Did his pride survive?
No. That is the lowest reading on this list, and the scouter did not break.
4
Somebody hit Bulma
Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods · 2013

Later at the same party, Bulma slaps Beerus. Beerus hits her back. Everything Vegeta had swallowed all night came back up at once.

He went Super Saiyan 2 and attacked a god, and for a moment his rage pushed him past Goku. He still lost. But a man who once would not admit to caring about anything showed the whole universe what he cared about.

Did his pride survive?

3
Final Atonement
Dragon Ball Z, episode 237 · Aug 24, 1994

After all the Majin business, Vegeta faced Majin Buu alone and used everything he had in a Final Explosion, burning himself out. He said goodbye to Trunks and Bulma first, and then, with clear effort, to Kakarot too.

Buu regenerated anyway. The sacrifice did not even work. It still sits near the top of this list, because it was the first time Vegeta did something that was not about Vegeta.

2
Kakarot, you are number one
Dragon Ball Z, episode 280 · Oct 18, 1995

The Japanese title of episode 280 translates to “Vegeta Takes Off His Hat!! Goku, You are No. 1.” The English dub called it “Vegeta’s Respect.” Watching Goku fight Kid Buu, Vegeta finally says it out loud: Goku is better.

It took him from 1989 to 1995 to get there. The episode aired 31 years ago this week.

Pride

Did his pride survive?
Not this time. That is what makes the scene work.
1
It’s over 9000!
Dragon Ball Z English dub, episode 21, “The Return of Goku”

Nappa asks what the scouter says about Goku’s power level. Vegeta reads it, yells that it is over 9000 and crushes the scouter in his hand. In the original Japanese he says over 8,000. The Ocean dub, with Brian Drummond as Vegeta, bumped it to 9,000, and the internet never let it go.

The clip that made it a meme went up on YouTube on October 17, 2006, which makes “over 9000” 20 years old as of last Saturday. It is the most quoted line Vegeta ever said, and he said it while losing an argument with a piece of equipment.

The scouter did not. His pride read over 9000, which is the joke.

Why he outlasted the plan

Akira Toriyama introduced Vegeta in chapter 204, in January 1989, meant as a short-lived, second-tier villain. Readers would not let him leave. He finished fourth in the 1993 character poll and second in 1995, and Viz Media found he is the most popular character in Dragon Ball Super. Toriyama said he was surprised Vegeta drew more votes than Goku in favorite-character polls. He has now been around for 37 years, most of them furious.

Vegeta: Your Questions, Answered

Why does Vegeta say “It’s over 9000”?
Because the English dub changed the number. In episode 21 Nappa asks Vegeta what the scouter says about Goku’s power level. The original Japanese line says over 8,000. The Ocean dub, voiced by Brian Drummond, made it over 9,000, and a YouTube clip from October 2006 turned it into a meme.
In what episode does Vegeta say Goku is number one?
Dragon Ball Z episode 280, which first aired in Japan on October 18, 1995. The English dub titled it “Vegeta’s Respect.”
What episode does Vegeta sacrifice himself against Majin Buu?
Dragon Ball Z episode 237, “Final Atonement,” first aired August 24, 1994. He uses a Final Explosion, and Buu regenerates.
Where can I buy a Vegeta t shirt?
Planet Euphoria sells a hand-drawn Vegeta graphic tee, hand-printed in Schenectady, New York and individually numbered in a run of 500, in off-white or black for $40 with a youth version for $35. Other retailers carry licensed Dragon Ball apparel if you want a standard option.
Where can I watch Dragon Ball Super: Beerus?
It premiered October 11, 2026 on Fuji TV in Japan and on Crunchyroll the same day. It is also on Hulu and reached Netflix on October 17. It is an enhanced re-edit of the Beerus, Resurrection of F and Universe 6 arcs.

Charizard vs Blastoise vs Venusaur: The Best Kanto Starter

Three starters, eight rounds, one scorecard. We ran Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur through stats, gym leaders, Mega Evolutions, the final boss and a 6.6 million vote fan poll to end the oldest argument on the playground.

Every kid who opened Red, Blue or Green had to make the same decision in Professor Oak’s lab, and almost none of them had any information when they made it. Thirty years later the argument is still going, and it has a fresh reason to come back: FireRed and LeafGreen landed on Nintendo Switch on February 27, Pokémon’s 30th anniversary, and Pokémon HOME started rolling out support for them on October 7. Pokémon also announced they will connect to Pokémon Champions, so the starter you pick on a Switch this fall can follow you somewhere real.

So we settled it. Eight rounds, one point each, every number pulled from the games’ published stats or the official fan vote. The scoring is ours. The numbers are not.

Eight Rounds

Round 1The first two gymsVenusaur

Every Kanto run opens the same way: Brock in Pewter City with a level 12 Geodude and a level 14 Onix, both Rock and Ground, then Misty in Cerulean City with a Water-type gym. This is where a lot of childhoods were decided.

Grass hits Rock and Ground for four times damage and hits Water for double. Bulbasaur walks through both gyms like it has a key. Squirtle cleans up Brock, then has to slap water at a water gym. Charmander shows up to a rock fight with fire, which does half damage, then shows up to a water gym with fire, which also does half damage.

Ref’s noteBulbasaur is the only starter with an advantage in both of the first two fights. Charmander has an advantage in neither.
Round 2Base stat totalCharizard

Add up all six stats and Charizard comes out at 534, Blastoise at 530 and Venusaur at 525. Nine points separate first from last, which in a fan argument is a blowout and in actual math is nothing.

Charizard gets there with offense: 109 Special Attack and 100 Speed. It is built to hit first and hit hard.

Ref’s note534 to 530 to 525. Charizard takes it by four points, which it will mention constantly.
Round 3ToughnessBlastoise

Toughness is HP plus Defense plus Special Defense. Blastoise has 100 Defense and 105 Special Defense, which adds up to 284. Venusaur is at 263. Charizard is at 241, last by a mile.

This is the turtle with two water cannons coming out of its shell. It was never supposed to lose a round about not falling over.

Ref’s note284 to 263 to 241. Blastoise takes a hit better than either of the others.
Round 4SpeedCharizard

Charizard has base 100 Speed. Venusaur has 80. Blastoise has 78. In a game where whoever moves first often wins, that gap matters more than the four-point lead in round two.

The funny part: Charizard has wings and could not learn Fly in the original Red and Blue. That only changed in Pokémon Yellow, even though the official artwork already had people riding it.

Ref’s noteNot close. Charizard moves before both of them in a straight race.
Round 5Fewest weaknessesBlastoise

Blastoise is weak to two types: Electric and Grass. Charizard is weak to three, and one of them is Rock at four times damage, so a single rock thrown at the right moment ends the conversation. Venusaur is weak to four: Fire, Ice, Flying and Psychic.

Being a plain Water type is not exciting. It is very hard to punish.

Ref’s noteTwo weaknesses beats three beats four. Blastoise again.
Round 6Mega EvolutionCharizard

All three got a Mega Evolution. Mega Venusaur jumps to a 625 total and Mega Blastoise to 630, with its two shoulder cannons merged into one big cannon. Bulbapedia notes that the Gigantamax version later went the other way and has 31 cannons.

Charizard got two Megas. Mega Charizard X turns black, breathes blue fire and becomes a Dragon type. Mega Charizard Y keeps the Flying type and pushes Special Attack to 159. Both sit at 634. The other two got one each.

Ref’s noteCharizard wins on a technicality the size of a whole extra form.
Round 7The final boss you get stuck withBlastoise

In Red, Blue, FireRed and LeafGreen your rival always picks the starter that beats yours. Bulbapedia spells it out: his choice is the type that weakens the type you picked. Years later, at the Indigo Plateau, that same starter is his last Pokémon, at level 65.

So the Bulbasaur kid ends the game staring down a Charizard. The Charmander kid gets a Blastoise. The Squirtle kid gets a Venusaur, which has the lowest stat total of the three. You lose to the type chart no matter what. Squirtle at least gets the easiest version.

Ref’s notePick Squirtle and your final boss is the 525, not the 534 or the 530.
Round 8The fan voteCharizard

In 2020 Pokémon ran a worldwide fan poll called Pokémon of the Year. It drew 6,608,215 votes across every species. In the Kanto ranking, Charizard finished first with 93,968 votes. Bulbasaur was third. Squirtle was 13th, Blastoise 14th.

Venusaur finished 28th with 10,454 votes. That is behind Muk, which is a pile of sludge, and behind Ditto, which is a pink blob that turns into other Pokémon. Fans love baby Bulbasaur and do not vote for the dad.

Count every member of each family that made the Kanto top 30 and the Charmander line has 108,017 votes, the Bulbasaur line 66,469 and the Squirtle line 35,271.

Ref’s noteCharizard wins the popularity contest by more than the other two lines combined.
Final scorecard · 8 rounds

Charizard wins the card. Blastoise wins every round that is about not getting knocked out. Venusaur wins the round that mattered most to a kid holding a Game Boy for the first time.

The Popularity Gap Is Not Close

Round eight deserves its own chart, because the gap is the whole story of how people feel about these three.

Charizard is the face of the generation. It is on the Red box, it is the card everybody wanted in 1999, and the anime’s most famous one spent a long stretch of the show ignoring Ash completely, which somehow made people love it more. Blastoise has a steady, quiet following. Venusaur is the strangest case: its baby form finished third among Kanto Pokémon in that vote, and the fully grown version finished behind a sludge monster.

The verdict
Awards

Best Pokémon: Charizard. Fastest, most powerful, most loved, two Megas, and a 1999 first edition card that sold for $550,000 at Heritage Auctions last December.

Best pick if you are starting today: Bulbasaur. Easiest first two gyms in the game.

Best pick if you want to win the argument by not losing: Blastoise. Fewest weaknesses, best defense, easiest final boss.

Which Starter Are You?

You already picked, decades ago. Here is what it says about you.

You picked Charmander. Tap for your diagnosis.
You chose the hard way and you have never once admitted it was the hard way. You lost to Brock at least one time. You still bring up Charizard in arguments that are not about Pokémon.
You picked Squirtle. Tap for your diagnosis.
You are calm, you are reasonable, and you quietly win most arguments by outlasting everyone. Your rival got the Grass type and you beat him anyway. At the end of the game you drew the weakest final boss, and you call that planning.
You picked Bulbasaur. Tap for your diagnosis.
You read the type chart before you made a decision. You beat the first two gyms on the first try and have never mentioned it. Red, the player character, uses a Venusaur in most of his battles, so the original main character agrees with you.

If the argument ends with somebody buying a Blastoise shirt, a Charizard shirt or a Venusaur shirt, all three starters live in Planet Euphoria’s hand-drawn Pokémon tee lineup, next to Gengar, Snorlax and Mew vs Mewtwo designs. Each one is drawn by hand, printed to order and numbered, so the shirt settles the debate for you, at least on the days you wear it.

Kanto Starters: Your Questions, Answered

Which Kanto starter is the best?
By our eight-round scorecard Charizard wins with 4 rounds to Blastoise’s 3 and Venusaur’s 1. For actually playing Red, Blue, FireRed or LeafGreen, Bulbasaur is the easiest start because Grass beats both of the first two gyms.
Which Kanto starter has the highest stats?
Charizard has the highest base stat total at 534, then Blastoise at 530 and Venusaur at 525. Blastoise has the best defenses and Charizard the best Speed and Special Attack.
What starter does your rival pick in FireRed and LeafGreen?
Your rival always takes the starter with the type advantage over yours. Pick Bulbasaur and he takes Charmander. Pick Charmander and he takes Squirtle. Pick Squirtle and he takes Bulbasaur. That starter is his last Pokémon in the Champion battle.
Where can I buy a Charizard shirt?
Planet Euphoria sells a hand-drawn Charizard graphic tee that is hand-printed in Schenectady, New York and individually numbered in a run of 500, in adult sizes S to 4XL for $40 and a youth version for $35.
