Vegeta’s 9 Most Vegeta Moments, Ranked (Over 9000 to Bingo)

Vegeta has spent 37 years being the proudest man in anime. We ranked the nine moments that define him and pointed a scouter at his pride in each one.

It is a good month to be Vegeta. Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, an enhanced re-edit with new cuts, re-rendered footage and newly recorded dubbing, premiered October 11 on Fuji TV and on Crunchyroll the same day. It is also on Hulu, and it reached Netflix on October 17. Its first arc is the one where a god of destruction crashes Bulma’s birthday party, which means Vegeta’s most humbling night is streaming again for a new audience. Also on October 17, the clip that turned “It’s over 9000!” into a meme turned 20.

So here is the ranking. Nine moments, from the merely very Vegeta to the most Vegeta thing he ever did. Every event, episode and date below is real and sourced. The pride readings are our scouter’s, and our scouter has opinions.

The Ranking

He made takoyaki for the God of Destruction
Dragon Ball Super, episode 6 · Aug 16, 2015

Beerus, a god whose job is destroying planets, shows up at Bulma’s birthday party. In the Dragon Ball Super TV version, Vegeta tries to keep him from wrecking Earth by making him takoyaki. It works, for a while.

This is a man who once called himself the Prince of all Saiyans standing over a griddle, flipping octopus balls for a cat.

Did his pride survive?
Barely. But Earth did, so he will tell you it was strategy.
8
He conquered a planet on his lunch break
Dragon Ball Z, original episodes 11 to 14 · anime only

On the way to Earth, Vegeta set his pod’s wake-up timer early so he could take over Planet Arlia and sell it. He fought King Moai and his guards, looked around, decided the place was too run-down to bring a good price, and blew up the whole planet with a Galick Beam.

The detour only exists in the anime. The edited English release squeezed four original episodes into one called “Trouble on Arlia.” He conquered a planet, judged it, and deleted it, all before reaching the place he was actually going.

Did his pride survive?
Fully intact. Arlia did not.

He let Cell become perfect, on purpose
Dragon Ball Z, episode 159 · Sep 30, 1992

Vegeta had just gotten stronger and wanted a real fight. Cell needed to absorb Android 18 to reach his perfect form. Future Trunks, his own son, tried to stop it, and Vegeta got in his way so Cell could finish.

Put plainly, his overconfidence let Cell absorb 18. Perfect Cell then beat him. Vegeta later helped Gohan finish the job, which is the closest he will get to admitting he was wrong.

Did his pride survive?
It survived. The rest of the planet nearly did not.

He let a wizard into his head for a rematch
Dragon Ball Z, Babidi Saga · 1994

Vegeta entered the World Martial Arts Tournament with one goal, and it was beating Goku, not making nice family memories. Babidi’s servant Dabura noticed how much darkness Vegeta was carrying and decided he could be turned.

Vegeta let Babidi’s power take hold of him and became Majin Vegeta, rematch finally booked. He knew exactly what he was signing up for and signed anyway.

Did his pride survive?
Pride was the whole reason he did it.

The bingo dance
Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods · March 30, 2013

Battle of Gods was the first animated Dragon Ball movie in theaters in 17 years, and the first one Akira Toriyama supervised personally. It made around $50.4 million. It also contains the scene of Vegeta at Bulma’s party, trying to keep Beerus calm by desperately performing a song and dance about bingo.

Let that sit. The proudest man in anime, in front of his wife, his son and Goku’s entire friend group, singing about bingo.

Pride
3
Did his pride survive?
No. That is the lowest reading on this list, and the scouter did not break.
4
Somebody hit Bulma
Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods · 2013

Later at the same party, Bulma slaps Beerus. Beerus hits her back. Everything Vegeta had swallowed all night came back up at once.

He went Super Saiyan 2 and attacked a god, and for a moment his rage pushed him past Goku. He still lost. But a man who once would not admit to caring about anything showed the whole universe what he cared about.

It changed shape. The pride was about his family now.

Final Atonement
Dragon Ball Z, episode 237 · Aug 24, 1994

After all the Majin business, Vegeta faced Majin Buu alone and used everything he had in a Final Explosion, burning himself out. He said goodbye to Trunks and Bulma first, and then, with clear effort, to Kakarot too.

Buu regenerated anyway. The sacrifice did not even work. It still sits near the top of this list, because it was the first time Vegeta did something that was not about Vegeta.

2
Kakarot, you are number one
Dragon Ball Z, episode 280 · Oct 18, 1995

The Japanese title of episode 280 translates to “Vegeta Takes Off His Hat!! Goku, You are No. 1.” The English dub called it “Vegeta’s Respect.” Watching Goku fight Kid Buu, Vegeta finally says it out loud: Goku is better.

It took him from 1989 to 1995 to get there. The episode aired 31 years ago this week.

Not this time. That is what makes the scene work.

It’s over 9000!
Dragon Ball Z English dub, episode 21, “The Return of Goku”

Nappa asks what the scouter says about Goku’s power level. Vegeta reads it, yells that it is over 9000 and crushes the scouter in his hand. In the original Japanese he says over 8,000. The Ocean dub, with Brian Drummond as Vegeta, bumped it to 9,000, and the internet never let it go.

The clip that made it a meme went up on YouTube on October 17, 2006, which makes “over 9000” 20 years old as of last Saturday. It is the most quoted line Vegeta ever said, and he said it while losing an argument with a piece of equipment.

The scouter did not. His pride read over 9000, which is the joke.

Pride Levels, Side by Side

The chart tells the real story. His proudest moments are the ones where he hurt someone or nearly ended the world. His lowest readings are the ones where he cared about somebody else.

Toriyama said he could not imagine a guy with that hairstyle getting popular. Fans voted him above Goku anyway.

Why he outlasted the plan

Akira Toriyama introduced Vegeta in chapter 204, in January 1989, meant as a short-lived, second-tier villain. Readers would not let him leave. He finished fourth in the 1993 character poll and second in 1995, and Viz Media found he is the most popular character in Dragon Ball Super. Toriyama said he was surprised Vegeta drew more votes than Goku in favorite-character polls. He has now been around for 37 years, most of them furious.
